Each Major at Niigata University Graduate School of Modern Society and Culture proceeds according to the following purposes. The Graduate School seeks individuals who demonstrate a willingness and an ability to become a highly specialized professional meeting the educational purpose.

Master’s Degree Program

The Major in Contemporary Cultural Studies aims to foster specialized professionals and researchers who have the specialized knowledge related to contemporary cultures and can identify and explore the issues. To achieve this aim, this program intends to cultivate the skills to identify and explore social or cultural issues from the perspectives of information, culture, philosophy, psychology, and life health behavioral sciences.

The Major in Social and Cultural Studies aims to foster specialized professionals and researchers who have the specialized knowledge related to society and culture and can identify and explore the issues. To achieve this aim, this program intends to cultivate the skills to identify and explore issues related to inter-social and inter-cultural understanding from the perspectives of the languages, histories and cultures of various regions around the world.

The Major in Law and Politics aims to foster specialized professionals and researchers who have the specialized knowledge related to laws, politics, and social affairs and can identify and explore the issues. To achieve this aim, this program intends to cultivate skills to identify and explore the issues related to legal systems and public administration from the perspectives of building a symbiotic society.

The Major in Economics and Management aims to foster specialized professionals and researchers who have the specialized knowledge related to economics and management and can identify and explore the issues. To achieve this aim, this program intends to cultivate the skills to identify and explore the issues related to the multilayered and complex economic phenomena involved in today’s increasingly globalized society from the perspectives of economics and management.

Doctoral Degree Program

The Major in Human Developmental Studies aims to foster highly specialized professionals and researchers who have the highly specialized knowledge related to human development and can solve the issues. To achieve this aim, this program intends to cultivate skills to analyze and solve the issues related to human development in the home, school, society, and elsewhere from the perspectives of the living environment, culture and education.

The Major in Multicultural Studies aims to foster highly specialized professionals and researchers who have the advanced specialized knowledge related to the regional languages, histories and cultures around the world and can solve the issues. To achieve this aim, this program intends to cultivate the skills to comprehensively and multifacetedly analyze and solve issues related to languages, histories and cultures of Japan, Asia, Europe, America, and elsewhere from the perspectives of symbioses promoting mutual understanding and development.

The Major in Multisocial Studies aims to foster highly specialized professionals and researchers who have the highly specialized knowledge related to the legal and economic systems and can solve the issues. To achieve this aim, this program intends to cultivate the skills to comprehensively and multifacetedly analyze and solve the issues related to international and regional systems of laws, politics, economics, or others in the international and regional societies from the perspectives of symbioses promoting mutual understanding and development.
